Peru: "Land of the Incas". Head east from Peru's bustling
capital city of Lima for roughly 300 km and you will find yourself in midst
of the coffee-growing region known as the Selva Central Chanchamayo. Selva Central
means "central jungle," and Chanchamayo is a fertile valley known
for its coffee and fruit production. In the foothills above La Merced, a major
coffee-marketing center in the Chanchamayo, coffee plants flourish in the sheltering
shade of avocado and banana trees as well as taller native forest species.
The "La Florida" committee represents 19 farmers in
this region whose average farm size is only 2 - 3 hectares. This excellent Peruvian
coffee is grown on these small plots using natural (organic) fertilizers, without
the use of synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides. The number of certified
organic coffee producers is growing.
Gentle,
sweet, and delicate in acidity with light, fruity over-tones. Roasty and mildly
bittersweet in the cup (pleasantly so), complicated by slightly dry, brisk cocoa
notes and perhaps some spicey hints. Nice long finish wow!
Roast: Full City to Full
City+: A nice medium-dark roast produces a lovely cup.
